We had the alarm fitted around 18 years ago, (can't find a model No) and i need to disconnect it from the mains. As it has anti- tamper features, it will ring while i disconnect the main supply and remove the battery from the main unit, but my fear is that the external bell will continue to ring, and i don't have access to a ladder, is the external bell likely to have a seperate battery or not?

Your best bet is to try it and see, turn off/disconnect the mains, remove the cover (which will cause a tamper fault) but will not trigger the external bell. Now disconnect the battery, if there is a battery in the external bell box the sounder will now sound. If so put the battery and cover back on and reset the panel to silence it. You will have to get a ladder to access the bell box to proceed further. If there is no external sounder battery, you can carry on dismantling!

Does it have to be hard wired, we've installed a wireless system with little fuss and it's expandable. We even have our outbuildings protected under the same alarm system and it's easy to "zone". This is the second time we've fitted a wireless system and they're easy peasy. The outside alarm box is also solar powered and these systems have never let us down. The control panel is hard wired with a battery back up and took less than a day to do the whole house.Just a thought.

I am not familiar with your particular model of alarm, but ALL of the residential systems that I install have both inside & outside bells, or sirens powered from the main box. So disconnecting the mains & the batteries should kill the entire system.

Before you do that though, I want to caution you.

All of my residential systems also have smoke alarms, & CO detectors installed as part of the overall system. Powering down the system will cause those things to stop working as well.
That may also be true in your case, so familiarize yourself with everything about your system BEFORE you knockdown the power to it.

Just a thought, after 18 years I would have thought the batteries are probably knackered anyway. Try turning the power off and then set the alarm, and then trigger it..........and see..
