has anyone ever been to or lived in Malaga, Spain...I am thinking of spending a month there this summer...Do you reccomend it? My second choice is Valencia...which do you think I should do. I love the beach so that is why I chose these two out of other locations in Spain. thanks

I also really want to immerse myself in the language and improve my spanish, so i'd like to go somewhere that isn't very touristy.

I think it's a shame that most people don't really see Malaga for what it is. They jump off the plane and head straight for the touristy regions such as Torremolinos, Benalmadena and Fuengirola and leave Malaga for a day out to visit the big shops. But Malaga is a fantastic city and has some lovely unspoilt beaches to the east, such as El Palo, Rincon de la Victoria and Benajarafe. These beaches are mainly visited by the Spanish and only a few foreign tourists. If it's the Spanish way of life you are looking for then I would deffinitely recommend Malaga and if you wanted a day out to the more touristy areas then you only have to catch the train and they are only minutes away.

The beaches of Pedregalejo & El Palo even though being very close to downtown they have a unique character when compared to the beach of the maritime promenade of Malaga, which could be described as the city's urban beach...

Although these two beaches are very close to each other they each have their own personality, they each have their bars and restaurants and both beaches are well maintained. This is why you have to visit both and decide which one you are going to claim as your own....

In these neighborhood beaches, every summer in the day they celebrate the Virgin del Carmen (16th of July), patron saint of the fishermen, they take the Virgin out of her church and out to sea in a boat, while being followed in procession by the fishing boats.

If you don't have the chance to watch this event, you can always start by taking a walk in the beaches of El Palo and into the promenade that unites them with the ones in Pedregalejo and continue your stroll till the Baños del Carmen and from there to the maritime promenade of Malaga that will lead you to the entrance of the park and from there to downtown.

Today, Malaga is a modern city, with an important commercial port, airport and university. Capital of the Coast of the Sun, it is one of the main tourist regions in the Spanish peninsula and it enjoys an exceptional climate throughout the year. See http://www.spain4uk.co.uk/places/malaga.htm The city of Valencia and the surrounding area will attract millions of visitors from around the world given that the city of Valencia has been chosen to host America's Cup in 2007. Just Google Malaga to see the current temperatures. Unfortunately Spain has had very unusual weather and temperatures are lower than normal with more rain. It should be getting warmer now and you will definitely get in some sunbathing. Have a nice time.

Malaga is becoming very touristy now... more so than Valencia but it also has more things to do. The best beaches are a little way outside the city.

Malaga is Ok for a city but for the beach, Go to Torrelominos.
It is about 15 ,miles away from Malaga, Miles of sandy beaches with lots of beach bars and cafes, A wide strolling boulevard along the beach that goes for miles, beach on one side, little shops and bars on the other . Stayed their two weeks Loved it.

Well, if you love the beach, I would recommend you Torremolinos (Malaga). It's a very lively city in summer. By the way, make up your mind that you won't find any coastal city in Spain empty.
If you want to improve your Spanish, you'll have to get used to our andalusian accent. In Valencia you'll have to get used to their dialect. :-D
You better decide yourself:
