Dunkin Doughnuts
(this is a recipe for the vanilla cream filled, still looking for the old fashioned recipe, will edit/add if I find it)

1 package regular or quick-acting yeast
1/8 cup warm water (105-115 degrees)
3/4 cup lukewarm milk (scalded then cooled)
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1 egg
1/6 cup shortening
2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Dissolve yeast in warm water in a mixing bowl. Add milk, sugar, salt, egg, shortening and 1 cup of flour. Beat on low speed while scraping bowl for 30 seconds. Beat on medium speed, scraping bowl occasionally, 2 minutes. Stir in remaining flour until smooth. Cover and let rise in a warm place until double, about 50-60 minutes. Turn dough onto a floured surface. Roll dough 1/2- inch thick. Cut with round cookie cutter. Cover and let rise on floured baking sheets until double, 30-40 minutes.
Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or Dutch oven to 350. Slide doughnuts into hot oil. Turn doughnuts as they turn golden brown, about one minute on each side. Remove carefully from oil (do not prick surfaces) and drain.
When cool, make a small hole to insert vanilla frosting. Take a sharp
knife and carefully make a large cavity inside of the doughnut to hold
the frosting. Fill the doughnuts generously with vanilla frosting and
dust heavily with powdered sugar. Makes: 12 doughnuts

VANILLA FROSTING FOR FILLING:
1/4 cup solid vegetable shortening
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1/2 tsp. clear vanilla extract
2 cups sifted confectioners sugar
1 tbl milk

Cream butter and shortening, gradually add sugar 1/2 cup at a time.
Add milk and vanilla, beat until light and fluffy.

The following is a recipe from my favorite, ancient Betty Crocker Cookbook, it's a cake doughnut, but may be similar to what you're looking for ... old fashioned doughnuts are my favorite, I've made the following recipe & they turned out yummy:
Cake Doughnuts
Vegetable oil
3 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
3 tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
½ tsp ground cinnamon
¼ tsp ground nutmeg
2 tbsp shortening
2 eggs
¾ cup milk

Heat oil (2-3 inches) in deep-fat fryer or heavy kettle to 375 degrees. Beat 1 ½ cups of the flour & the remaining ingredeients in large mixer bowl on low speed, scrape bowl constantly, 30 seconds. Beat on medium speed, scrape bowl occasionally, 2 minutes. Stir in remaining flour. Turn dough onto well-floured cloth-covered board; roll around lightly to coat w/ flour. Roll gently 3/8 inch thick.

Cut w/ floured doughnut cutter (or a large circular object such as a drinking glass for outside, and a small juice glass or top of a bottle to cut out center hole). Slide doughnuts into hot oil w/ wide spatula. Turn doughnuts as they rise to surface. Fry until golden brown, 1 to 1 ½ minutes on each side. Remove from oil; do not prick doughnuts. Drain on paper towels. Serve plain, sugared or frosted. Makes 2 dozen doughnuts.

Buttermilk doughnuts: decrease bakng powder to 2 tsp & beat in 1 tsp baking soda. Substitute buttermilk for the milk. Do not use self-rising flour.
