You definitely want a warm environment. A comfy place people can go and hang out.

I don't know how much space you have/geographic location of the shop, but a local coffee shop I really like has a separate back room with a fireplace. This is really nice for cold areas in the winter.

The most important thing (besides good coffee) is really comfy chairs that make people want to sit down and stay there for awhile.

Comfortable seats, clean, clean, clean place. Warm, cozy feeling. No loud, intrusive music; just because you like it doesn't mean others do. If people are going to think and read, a quiet atmosphere is best. A free wireless connection--though that may cause customers to take up seating that could be used profitably. You do need to make a profit, so folks just hanging out without buying much isn't that great an idea.

As for design, I think you should find a designer, or take a good look at coffee places that are popular. Design can influence how much people eat and drink.

My favorite coffee shop had two (wipe-off) couches facing eachother with a coffee table between them, regular tables for other people, a few 'comfy' chairs that you could curl up in and read, and a bookshelf with random books that were bought at garage sales and such. My favorite part, though, was the washroom. There was a wall that was painted with chalkboard paint and a box of chalk, if people are going to write on the walls anyways you might as well make it on your terms!

The owner was quite personable and it was the only coffee shop that was full until 3am every day! (Man, I miss that place!)

Tacky decor is ok as long as it's clean with good service and food. I like the old-fashioned thick coffee cup/mugs and booths. Good lighting for reading, studying, and the never ending coffee refill. Mile high lemon meringue pie. Brings back memories!

Small town feel. No big chain coffee houses. Helpful people, friendly faces, lots of chairs and tables...etc

I helped create a very successful cafe and typed up a bunch of ideas for you, then my computer froze and I had to reboot before I could post it. (grr, hate that)
Now I have to take off, so email me if you're interested and I'll give you some tips.
Seriously!
