There are air conditioning units made that will work. Some manufacturers make units called "split systems". The condensing unit si mounted on an exterior wall and than the inside units are wall mounted in each room. Mitsubishi is one of the manufacturers and there are others. depending on the size of your house it may take more than one system.
Contact a local HVAC dealer and ask if they sell split systems for air conditioning. Or look up the Mitsubishi on he internet and see what information they can assist you with.

It's not central air, but you could put an electric whole house exhaust fan in the attic. It works by pulling air up from the house into the attic, and blowing it out the attic vents. We had one, and on a hot summer day, it made a difference in the house. it wasn't as good as central AC, but it did help.
I would run it early in the day when the forecast called for hot weather, and fill the house with cool air. Then we'd close all the windows, and keep the cool air inside. Try to make sure that you don't release any unnecessary heat inside during the day - this was mainly lots of cooking, in our case. Do any heavy baking early in the day or late at night.
You have to make sure that the attic has enough ventilation to let all that extra air escape, of course.
Other than that, I would look into a couple of window AC units, and maybe use some fans to move the air around from room to room.

If you have an unfinished basement you can have ductwork and an airhandler installed in your basement. If not the attic is another possibility. It is a lot of work and depending on the size of the job can be costly $4000.00 and higher. Another option is a through the wall unit like you see in hotel rooms. It would probably be a good idea to consider a heat pump if you are serious about this. If the duct work is done correctly it will heat more evenly. Of course this depends on where you live as to wheather or not a heat pump is practical.

You can install a high velosity cooling system. It is not to tough to install as long as you have an attic or basement. If you have a basement and no second floor you can put a airhandler with conventional duct work
