The strings are tuned, from bottom to top [thin to thick] to the following pitches:
String: 1 [thinnest string] tuned to E [frequency 659.26 Hertz]
String: 2 tuned to B [493.88 Hertz]
String: 3 tuned to G [392.00 Hertz]
String: 4 tuned to D [293.66 Hertz]
String: 5 tuned to A [220.0 Hertz]
String: 6 [thickest string] tuned to E [164.81 Hertz]
A set of inexpensive ‘pitch pipes’ can be bought from most music stores and will help to get the guitar in tune. The strings can also be tuned to another instrument, such as a piano.
Other, more elaborate electronic tuners will be required if your son needs to be exactly in tune [called concert pitch] – if playing with other musicians e.g.
If he’s right at the beginners stage, the most important thing is that the guitar should be in tune with ‘itself’, so fingering for various chords will be accurate.
PS: The above tuning is called ‘Standard Tuning’ and is the usual tuning used for beginners books on theory and chord shapes.
Best of luck to him!!

--------------------E(Thickest string at top of guitar, when you play it)
--------------------A
--------------------D
--------------------G
--------------------B
--------------------E(Thinnest string at bottom)
Invest a tenner on a little electronic tuner, if it's an acoustic, get one with a built-in microphone. Your local guitar shop will help you, unlike many other shops, the staff usually have a real passion for all things guitar.
