My hard drive crashed and I was told that if I froze it, that may help me be able to get some files off of it. I froze it in a bag for 12hrs and then this is what I did(all in about a half an hour): I set my new drive to Master and my old drive to Slave with the jumpers, then I booted up the computer, went under Device Manager, then I clicked on search for new hardware. My old drive showed up on that page. So I clicked on it and Properties came up, then I clicked on the Volume tab, then the Populate button. The information that came up was 0mb all down the line and the status line said unreadable.

I just want to make sure that this information is telling me that the drive is dead, and that there is no other way to get the info outside of having a pro do it. I'm guessing the computer recognized the drive enough to give the ID of it, but it is truly unreadable so it couldn't do anything further????

I think your old drive is toast. The ID comes from the controller on the HDD, not the disk.

If you have really important data that you must recover, there are a number of companies that can help you. Be prepared to spend thousands of dollars though.

Google for "hard disk recovery" to find service providers.

Jman,

One thing that worked for me might be worth trying.

I took my drive out of the case and turned it on it's side. It worked long enough for me to recover my data.

I think changing the orientation might have effected the head position just enough to make the difference. I was so happy to get my data I can't tell you.

It is certainly worth a try.

i might propose doing a hardware diagnostic, there are ought to loose gadget on line which could be useful with this to verify for any undesirable sectors. inspite of the uncomplicated fact that, I do have faith motives why its now no longer displaying is thru way of a corrupted boot sector on the hard drive. this might many times be repaired with the aid of way of a diagnostic reformat.

The freeze 'trick' never has worked. For several reasons. It kicks the unit out of its operating range.
