I have been given a task to design a brochure using either Word or Publisher, could anyone please tell me if there are any advantages over the packages to use, as in my opinion either one would produce the same output

Microsoft Publisher is specially designed for printing brochures, catalogues, advertisements etc. It comes with Wizards which have Design, Color Schemes and Layouts which can be used as presented or easily altered. It also has pre-designed Mastheads, Logos, Attention getters etc., all of which you would have to design from scratch in Microsoft Word, in short it is much easier to use or adapt a brochure using Publisher.

You should use Publisher for your brochure. You can use Word in the same way, but it's easier in Publisher and there are some things you can't do in Word but can in Publisher.
