You need a cowl. It's a wind protector for the top of the chimney pot and stops the wind from blowing smoke back down the stack.
The most common one's are spinning Jenny's but there are many on the market. If you live in a council house they have to provide you with one on request.

Your chimney is not drawing. The top of your chimney has to reach above the crown of the house. second, if there is not some air coming into the house, it will blow back, so TRY opening a window just a little. Safer that way anyhow. Check to see if the flue is opened or closed.

Had this same problem at cad towers.Turned out to be a blockage in one of the chimneys. How I resolved this was genius even by Cads standards.Get your man, who does(one of the gardeners is ideal) to do this as it can be a bit messy.I of course have binkie (makes him feel wanted don't you know) do this type of thing for me.Get your man (expendable) to place a 45 gallon petrol can with the top cut off into the fire place. For safety tell them to light at arms length. Never had a problem since with the smoke coming back into there room.Turned out the blockage was one of the children from the orphanage I gave 5p to in 1976, to sweep the chimneys, must have got stuck and died in there. When binkies skin grew back he looked ten years younger, which was nice, must dash just seem one of the maids bending over doing some dusting. Waste not want and all that. TTFN............................ .................................................

The simple answer is that the damper is closed allowing the smoke to stay in the room and is not going up the chimney.

try a cowl first if not The chimney sweep could have used a normal brush which only pushes through a 4"hole if the flue is corroded it needs to be cored
to do this we dropped a corded wieght down the flue tieing a sack on the cord and pulling it down the flue
be sure you leave enough cord to pull it back up if necessary
