A rescue plane wants to drop supplies to isolated mountain climbers on a rocky ridge 235 m below. Assume the plane is traveling horizontally with a speed of 225 km/h (62.5 m/s).

Figure 3-37

(a) How far in advance of the recipients (horizontal distance) must the goods be dropped (Figure 3-37a)?
m
(b) Suppose, instead, that the plane releases the supplies a horizontal distance of 425 m in advance of the mountain climbers. What vertical velocity (up or down) should the supplies be given so that they arrive precisely at the climbers' position (Figure 3-37b)? (Assume up is positive.)
m/s
(c) With what speed do the supplies land in the latter case?
m/s

a) Work out the time required for the supplies to land on the ground. (clue: consider only vertical velocity component of the package). Take that time and use it on the horizontal velocity component of the package to work out the distance.

ans = 43x.xx m

b) This time work out time required for the package to reach to climbers (horizontal component only). Then considering only vertical component work out the initial velocity. (clue: you're given distance, acceleration and time which you worked out, and you need initial velocity, so which equation should you use?)

ans = 6x.xx m/s

c) Basically use an equation which involves final velocity.

ans = 1.xx m/s

Please note: As you have not given diagrams I have made default assumptions so hint to answers may not be correct!

This is a very incomplete question. Information is missing.

Is the plane flying straight at the cliff or along side it or at some angle? Is the plane flying level or climbing or descending?

Finally, this is a really stupid idea. If the climbers aren't in trouble enough already, hitting them with supplies delivered with a horizontal velocity of 225 km/h should be sufficient to knock them off the ridge.
