u made a big improvent and its good for 14

i like the way u draw the eyes and the face shading...

however the face outline is a little bit old..made avril look older

and the position of the eye on our right hand side a little bit off

the lip too thick

u can either draw it exactly like the real person for portrait or drastically different by emphasizing certain unique features for a cartoon type drawing

overall good job

Charr,

You're showing great improvement, and yes, this is wonderful work for a 14 year old. The proportions aren't perfect, but that takes practice. Becoming a great artist is like any true skill - it takes time, instruction and lots of practice. Keep in mind, also, that a young mind sees things differently that an older mind, and perspective, depth, etc. change as we get older. I know that when I was your age I was terrified of color, and stuck mostly to black and white (charcoal, pencil, pen and ink), and now I'm in love with color in my artwork. That's the great thing about being artistic - exploring new things, discovering new media to work in, stretching yourself as an artist.

For your next attempt, try gridding out the photo you're working from. Use graph paper to print it out on, then lightly grid your paper to match, then draw what's in each square. It's kind of like doing a puzzle, but helps you a bit with proportion. Another great exercise is not to draw your subject but the negative space around it, like the shadows, objects that frame it, etc. This also helps teach depth. And keep in mind while you're working on your subject, that strong contrasts build drama. So, for instance, if the shadow on Avril's face is darker than say her eyes you want to capture that and give the piece more drama.

Best thing, though, is to keep drawing. Every stroke you make, whether good or bad, is teaching your brain something, so keep at it.

The best thing about art is that it doesn't always have to be in proportion. To answer your question, yes, the 2007 version is in pretty good natural proportion. You are also gifted for a 14 year old. Don't worry too much about proportion though...just draw things the way you see them. That is how art works. Keep it up!

Yes it is-don't give up on the shadow area though.I am a proff. artist (30 years) and did portraits in college in a restaurant bar. It was HARD! Practice, practice! Thats the best. My daughter is just 13 yrs and is already selling her canvases for 18-60.00 on Ebay. Good clothes money and she's learning art all the time-keep up the good work. Look at others work and check into "Reflections" a contest by the National PTA every year around Oct/Nov. If your school has a PTA in good standing, you can enter. There is a theme, but you can enter art, poems, stories, multimedia, photyos, dance and more-music. Prizes, gift certificates and awards to our local kids.

Very good Charr, If you keep progressing as you already have, you will be real good. Seems in proportion to me. Like the shading! :o) x
