Go to the health food store and get some oregano oil. Put a few drops into a glass of water, Gargle and swallow. It will help numb the pain and help reduce the swelling. You can also put a few drops under your tongue, let it sit for a minute or so and then swallow. This is very powerful stuff and will burn a little on the way down but it is a remedy that works well. You can repeat it every time your throat starts to hurt and your breath will smell like oregano.

Sore throat is a common complaint with following characteristic symptoms.
1) pain in throat
2) difficulty in swallowing
3) associated symptoms like fever, cough, bodyache etc.

The first thing that should be done is to evaluate its severity. If there is fever above 100 degree centigrade, one should visit a doctor. If there are general symptoms, one can try herbal remedies and home remedies.

General Dietary Advice:

Avoid fried, cold, sour, pungent food stuff. Avoid too much water esp. after sunset. You should use lukewarm water for drinking purpose.

Home Remedies:

Do gargle with lukewarm water. It is a good practice to add a pinch of salt. Some persons feel it comfortable to add half a tablet of aspirin i.e. 150 mg, that is a general painkiller and available as OTC drug in several countries. But avoid if one is allergic to it.

Herbal Remedies:

There are several ayurvedic herbal formulations that can be taken with milk or honey or lukewarm water and never with cold water.

Mulethi or licorice herb is very soothing for the throat and works well. Some people take a piece of it and chew it inside mouth. Others prefer to take its powder.

Holy basil leaves, fresh ginger, cardamon are some of the popular herbs that can be taken along with tea. One popular method is add these herbal remedies in tea leaves while boiling water.

If there is fever or severe pain in throat, one should visit the doctor.

Hope this helps.

You no! You must be catching that nasty bug that's been going around. That cold doesn't get too bad, but the congestion lasts for over a week! To soothe your sore throat I would suggest gargling with warm salty water. Hope you get well soon!

For IMMEDIATE relief, try Chloraseptic spray (or something similar), but it'll wear off very fast. I chew one Tylenol, letting it dissolve; this works MUCH better but still won't affect the cold you might be getting (you can use aspirin for this but it can upset your stomach and isn't good for your teeth). After dealing w/the pain, the other suggestions, esp. lemon (or lime-just as good but sweeter) and salt water gargling, are excellent. Sucking on a Vitamin C tab also seems to work. Take them anyway, along w/echinacea, to boost your immune system. You COULD try one of those new products like "Zicam", but I've no idea how well they work.

If you are having trouble swallowing, try dissolving one or two aspirin (non coated because its faster) in a half teaspoon of water and gargling and then spitting it out. The relief does not last long but it will give you enough time to ingest some liquid or food.
