vertue is right, a little Karo syrup will help. Try switching to soy formula, that's what my doctor had us do, and after that we never had trouble with it again.

Has he just not gone for a couple of days? Are the stools hard? Some grunting and straining and red face is normal. Also having one bm every few days is normal. Breastfed babies can even go once every 5-6 days as they get a little older b/c their bodies absorb all the nutrients and therefore have less waste. One thing people may not always think of, is he getting enough to eat? Does he have plenty of wet diapers? If you know he is getting plenty to eat then look to see if stools are hard or he is doing more than grunting and hasn't gone in awhile than try a 1tsp of dark karo syrup in bottle. The karo syrup can be adjusted with more or less depending how bad it is. Otherwise if you choose not to do the karo syrup another option is apple juice. You could try 1 oz at a time up to two times per day. Do not do both methods or you could have too loose of stools. Follow up with your doctor if this happens a lot for him.

Newborn babies are basically ready for life when they are born healthy after nine months of development. However, their many bodily systems have yet to be fully formed. Many of their systems require certain measures to fully support their new bodies and to ensure the newborn baby is provided the best opportunity for good health, both now and in the future. Newborn babies are prone to a variety of different conditions that are not always serious, but do need to be addressed in the most natural and safest method possible.

I know this may sound weird but trust me it works. When my son was that same age he had the same problem and my mother (southern woman :-D told me to buy some KARO (clear) syrup and just put a little bit in his mouth. Let him suck just a little off of your finger... Within minutes he was going....
I hope it works for you.
I agree with Karen (above me) too.

I'm guessing hes on formula with iron. Unless they're anemic they dont need the extra iron. At that age he shouldn't be constipated at all, take him to the doctor.

I'd take him to the doctor to find out if he's on the wrong formula. At that age he shouldn't be constipated!

Call your local pharmacist. But I think with your son being only 3 wks old, they may recommend you call your Dr.
Your son is only constipated if his bowel movements are solid. If his last one wasn't, then he may not be.
