By burning up the fuel, an approaching fire won't be able to burn anymore, its a common tactic in fighting wildland fighters....sorry, no philosophy to the answer, just being practical.

That's the logic behind that reasoning. Personally I don't fight fire with fire; I fight fire with water.

I guess so, but I never fight fire with fire. It's so overdone. I use water just to change thing up, (so nobody will suspect anything).
