It is. I've seen it destroy several of my friends' lives. One of which is in jail doing alot of time for running heroin across state lines.
I think one of the reason is insecurity with who a person is, as well as to just fit in since they believe "everybody's doing it" or "all my friends are doing it" even though that's not the case.
Even smoking is bad for you. Although we all know that by now. At least you should know that. My Grandfather had numerous heart attacks, strokes, and other ailments due to smoking. He passed away over the summer.
One of my good friends was a smoker. He just got married to a woman with a child and just found out that he had a kid on the way. He decided to give it up for(For good this time, he had tried a few times before). He has done it, he feels so much better now. He felt really bad for a while, but one day while playing basketball he coughed up some nasty black tar. From that point he started feeling sooooo much better. He kept coughing up stuff for a few weeks, but he's now able to play basketball without having to stop every few seconds to catch his breath.
He quit to protect his children from the brain damage that is caused by smoking. I respect him for that.
as for celebs doing it. I can't tell you why. It's probably because of their lifestyle. I don't know I pay as little attention to celebs as possible, so I don't know much about them(Thank God).

Smoking and drinking is bad for you IF you let it control you. I don't smoke or do drugs but I do drink (gotta live up that Irish heritage afterall!). For the most part I socially drink so just 2 or 3 while chatting up with friends or playing pool or whatever. When you drink it helps to know your limit so that you don't go overboard. Yeah, celebrities are known to go overboard with drink and drugs but honestly, would you hear about it if they weren't? Lets not get started on the tabloids.

It all started from the youngs , the youngs emulated from the elders, and the elders copied from the Holywood movies. It gives them a falsed sense of becoming a hero and tried to act like a hero as in movies(almost all heroes and tough guys in the movies smoked), thus everybody followed the trend in the early years until some doctors declared it unhealthy in the later years.

I agree, it is very bad for you. However, people don't just go in search of addictions. People who feel the need to go to alcohol and drugs probably have problems they fell can not be resolved in any other way but substance abuse. I recommend seeing a counselor or a therapist if someone needs help coping with personal problems.

It takes your mind off of things, makes you numb and not caring. If I didn't have a child I'd be doing them and probably be dead. Many people have had a very bad life, they can't get the help they need even if it's out there, some fall through the cracks, some find help, but it's not what they need. there are many reasons. Don't judge people until you walk in their shoes !

I am asthmatic and I do not smoke!
Kids smoke or drink because they consider it as "cool". Those who don't are considered weird and not cool. With this type of teenage pressure, you are forced to try to smoke or drink in order to fit in with others. No one wants to be left out. This holds true with sex. Your friends will laugh at you if you are still a virgin or worst be called a homo. If only kids learn to respect each others choice, a lot of kids would refrain from smoking and drinking. Also, parents should be involved.

I think it's because people are afraid of the real world. Matbe peer pressure. They think that once they start to smoke, they'll get popular or all their problems will go away. But they are wrong, because once they are not high and they're back to normal all their problems are back again.
My grandpa just recently died from smoking. People think smoking will make their lives better, but it will ruin yours and the people that care about you.

This is so wild! I wasn't going to ask that question exactly but I was thinking along those lines.
As a former smoker, druggie, and drinker.... I can tell you the reasons for doing so are as numerous as the people who do it.
The reasons for not are quite a bit simpler.
It's all just plain bad for you.
