It's definitely a media thing.
Back in the beginning days of movies, when it was only black and white, the people who got noticed most were the ones who presented the most contrast in that medium, either the very dark brunettes ( or black hair) or the platinum blonds. At that time, the scale tipped in favor of the darker haired women. Somehow, they were considered more, umm, lively, than their lighter sisters. ( Let's not get too suggestive here)
One of the first women to break through that idea was the actress Jean Harlow , closely followed by Mae West. Most of their films were comedies, and since they were hugely popular, fashion dictators started up the newest set of wheels. And blonde soon became equated with dumb.
With the intervention of WWII ( blond German purists, etc.) the idea was allowed to rest a bit, but I remember TV commercials in the late 50s and 60s, where the woman proclaimed, " If I have one life to live, let me live it as a blond", showing how this fashion idea had taken root in American culture.
Let's just stay smart, and not judge any book by its cover!

They are stereotypes.
Some blondes are dumb and some brunettes are stupid.
Some blondes are boring and some brunettes are boring.
Some blondes are extremely smart ( and believe me, I know some! ) and some brunettes are smart.
Hair colour has nothing to do with it.

only the fake blonds are dumb, we true blonds have learned why it's not that fun being blond because you always have guys looking at you with there tongues hanging out, and don't know how to use they're brains, so it makes us learn about the stupidity of the opposite sex a lot faster

its all a snow job that he media did on us. It really is rediculous to think you can actually tell anything about a person by the color of their hair. Of course the girls that played along with the dumb blond gag didn't help at all.

Brown and black hair is common, hence "boring." Most people in the US who are blonde are bleached blonde, and it's thought the chemicals cause brain damage. They smell, but they don't actually cause damage unless you breathe them in for hours on end in an unventilated room. The natural platinum blonde color is extremely rare, but interestingly enough, most of the women on my mother's side of the family are natural platinum.

They are stereotyping people. I guess since my hair is reddish they'd say I'm a combination of boring and dumb. I happen to be neither!

My opinion would be that culture made it that way. If you are told something over and over it becomes "truth". Your question says it all... "why do people THINK".... it's only their opinion and too bad if they actually believe that.
