I have used sump pumps alot. You just don't want to let it run dry. It's OK to put it away in storage when you are finished. Then when you need it again it will run just fine. It does not need to be kept in water even if you are not using it. Rust should not be a problem considering the parts are made of materials like plastic, brass or aluminum.

sure. you could drain the sump pit and save it dry. the following is what to search for: a million. What type of pump do you've now; pedestal, the position area if it sticks up out of the pit, or submersible, the position the pump sits thoroughly interior the pit? 2. What type of glide does the pump have: is it a floating glide bulb, or it it immediately fastened on the pump? 3. Is there a verify valve? A verify valve is on the launch pipe and stops water from flowing decrease back into the sump pit. 4. Does the sump pit have a liner and cover? If there's a liner is it perforated to allow drainage? Now to allow you to comprehend what you should have. The pit must have a liner. A Polyethylene (PE) plastic liner with a cover is critical. it really is a non bio-degradable textile and the slotted cover is designed for it. they're many times about 18" in diameter and 30 " deep. the hollow must be deeper with a minimum of 6" of stone below it. Drill a dozen or so a million/2" holes interior the bottom of the pit and some on the decrease sides to promote drainage. next the pump must have an connected glide that operates the pump, we use a Zoeller 57001 .3HP Pump. you should have a a million a million/2" agenda 40 %pipe with a three/sixteenth " vent hollow a foot as a lot as ward off the pump from turning out to be air locked. The verify valve must be set larger. After putting the sump cover on, when you're nevertheless having moisture themes, i'd advise a basement ventilation equipment like E-Z Breathe it really is extra appropriate than a dehumidifier because it truly works year round.

Wet or dry, I don't suppose there's much you could do about it anyway? I mean if you deepened the sump pit, I'd wager it would soon get dry again.
I'd consider the dry sump a blessing in that at least your foundation isn't continuously soaking wet!
If this is a seasonal issue only, you could consider giving it a shot with a little WD-40. Don''t soak it, just mist it. A small amount such as this once or twice a year should have little impact on the environment.

It should be OK. If used with salt water, run it in fresh water to clear the salt it might have collected. If used with muddy or dirty water, do the same to clear the internal parts of such.
Before storage, spray some paint to external parts that is prone to rust. Wipe dry and check it every three months. I have mine for 5 years now and it still works great.

You should keep it under water. Water sits on and in the pump, so when it is dry and air reacts with it, it will begin to rust faster than if it is always submerged.
