They only have 7000 men over there to begin with. The US probably has that many on leave right now. The Basra sector is all Shiite. So there is not a lot of turmoil as in the Sunni triangle. Blair is pulling out 1700 men. Sounds like he is just sending home those due for a rotation, leave, or discharge. So it is largely a propaganda announcement for his own political gain.

The british army is overstretched, underfunded and understaffed. We cannot fight a war succesfully on two fronts any more, which is why most of the troops being withdrawn from Iraq are being sent to Afghanistan, which is currently a more usual warzone; instead of sporadic suicide attacks there is an enemy who behave in a reasonably conventional way. Iraq was too unpopular, and it will continue to be a slow painful political suicide to anyone who keeps troops there.

Regardless of what "anthonyinkc" says, I've talked with so many people in the military who have been to Iraq and half of them want to go back for more action. I've even talked to several UK soldiers who have been in Iraq and they say they are wanting to see this thing through in Iraq. It's the dumb British government that has the problem. Most of them never served in war time and don't know what it's about.
Besides, the prince is going to Iraq and he's going to make a fine leader for it.

According to the BBC - Britain is withdrawing its forces from Iraq because their military there have been a total failure and one that has been made hush-hush so that Blair does not look bad!

Most of the Brits are opposed to the war, everyone knows that.
Their gov't actually listens to its citizens. Thus the slow pullout.
George Bush won't.

Well if you believe Bush and Cheney it's because we "won" in the south. If that were really true then why are they leaving entirely instead of redeploying north where they are needed? You know who hasn't said they are leaving because they won? Tony Blair.
