My CPU usage goes up to 100% before i start running any programs on my computer. Memory isn't a problem because i just had another 512 MB card installed. I don't know what the problem is. It also won't let me go on the internet, though it says that everything you need to access the internet is connected. The internet isn't what i'm worried about so much. Can anyone help me out and give me some suggestions? I already tried defragmenting it and that didn't work. I've scanned my computer for viruses and it says i don't have any, so i really don't know what the problem is or where it came from. Does anyone know how to bring the CPU back down?

Sounds like too many utilities, programs or trojans running in the background. Check the Start up file to see what is listed to run at Start up. I find wiping the drive and reinstalling the original OS and programs works wonders. Some virus programs can hold you up at the start too. They often are set to update every time you turn on the PC, and can use alto of CPU & Ram. Run your Rescue Disks. If it runs better afterward, you need to be more selective of what programs you add. PCworld.com has a good antivirus that's free and doesn't seem to use as much CPU/RAM.

Sounds like you have AddWare or Spyware. Try and find addware se, or spyware doctor, and finally spyware sweeper. Any of these will find out if your computer is running malicious code. Perhaps you have too many programs that are running in the background? Is your toolbar filled with icons? You can see how many programs you have running in the background and how to shut them down until you need them by going to the run menu. Type in the command MSCONFIG, it does not have to be capitalized, just wanted to emphasize it. Select the start up tab, then uncheck the known programs you do not want to start when Windows starts. If you experience problems after you use the msconfig, you can do it over and then recheck those programs. I had trouble in the past by unchecking the one for my audio, and once for the internet. Both were resolved by checking those boxes again.
You do not need programs such as microsoft word starting when the computer starts, just when you click on the program to start it.

how much total memory do you have in your computer? by today's standards, 512 MB isn't that much of a difference. I would got with a least 1 gb if you're upgrading, because programs are becoming more and more demanding for power. CPU usage is usually related to memory, so i think that's you're problem. maybe you have too many programs running at once?
