In the case of in-vitro, the eggs are removed from the woman's ovaries and placed in a petri dish, where the sprem is then introduced. Once sperm and egg unite, an early embryo is formed. It is then injected into the woman's womb, where it will hopefully implant and grow to be a healthy baby.

The case where the sperm is injected into the woman's uterus (not the ovary itself, the egg has to be out and into the fallopian tubes first) is call artificial insemination.

In vitro means that an egg and a sperm are joined outside of the body, then implanted into the lining of the uterus.
