I've never made anything with a sewing machine before, but i bought one not long ago and want to try it out. what should i make?

Go to your fabric store/superstore and in the pattern department there are patterns that are specially marked EASY. They have only a few pattern pieces and very easy-to follow instructions. Also, they are more inexpensive than the heavy-duty tailored things.

This way, you may actually like what you make, and it will give you the confidence to keep sewing.

In a word, aprons and pillows are very easy, and can be done without purchased patterns.

An elastic waist skirt - really simple. You might want to check out the beginners patterns at the fabric shop.

I remember making a pair of shorts in home ec when I was in 7th grade. That wasn't too hard

I would recommend a vest or a skirt.
