Just a while ago my mouse-pointer would move crazily and opened a lot of my files. The actual mouse wasn't moving but the pointer wouldn't stop moving... What happened?

Someone is accessing your PC through a VNC program! I say this because its not only moving around, but opening programs or files! You either used remote desktop with someone or someone has installed VNC software on your PC! Look in the task bar for any funky lookin icons and see what they are, look in add remove programs for VNC software.

That has happened to me before too. If you have installed or downloaded any new programs recently it could be a conflict. I would go in and check your mouse settings in control panel and/or re-install your mouse. If it hasn't happend since that time then it probably corrected itself when you re-booted. Hope this helps.

Also, If you have a can of compressed gas for cleaning keyboards I would take the mouse ball out if you have one...spray the inside while holding it with the opening facing down. Make sure you clean the wheels inside the mouse under the ball. There probably are 2 or 3 wheels. They build up dust and fuzz from mouse pads and tend to make the mouse sluggish and stick. Use a Q-tip with alcohol but don't drip alcohol on the little pc board. Let it dry before you put the ball back in. Good Luck!

Opticals do "roam" if they are used on a patterned surface.

A battery mouse will also behave erratically when the batteries are low.
