I think they do blood tests, which will show drugs.. and if thats the case, while you are pregnant they try to get you help to stop doing drugs.. and by the time you have the baby, they do more tests to see if you are on and if you are they take the baby from you and put the baby with DSS or foster care until you are able to prove you are a fit parent.

I have worked in child welfare -
Most hospitals test all mother's and newborns for drugs - its called a toxicology screen.
If they find a positive tox for either the mother or the child they will contact DSS. Sometimes this happens before the mother and baby leave the hospital sometimes the results dont come in until after discharge.
They do not contact the police. DSS will NOT automatically remove the child from the mother either. Many times if the results come in before discharge the hospital will delay the release of the infant until DSS can assess the situation. The hospital has the legal authority do to this. DSS will then talk to the mother and father- if there is one in the home- as well as any other adults (grandparents etc) that may reside in the home. DSS does not view a positive tox for marijuana = to crack. Each situation must be looked at individually and reviewed for what level of risk the drug use presents to the child, this also includes assessing the other adults in the home.

I would say that they do run certain test. They do things like take the baby's blood to determine the type and if he/she has any diseases. This kind of test may yield something like drugs in the system.Unfortunately if there are drug found in the baby system then you could loss the child to the state at the least go to jail.

They have to have consent to do a drug test unless you're under 18. They would never just randomly test for drugs.
