I understand that it is commonly understood, however, I can't figure out exactly what book this happened in. I need to reference it for a paper. Thanks.

I think that happened in the Iliad- you know the one with the Trojen War...

I know both Illiad and Odyssey don't have as much detail in them as people normally suspect- in Illiad it might briefly talk about it somewhere (ikd) but it won't actually tell the whole story. The Illiad starts with the war- the war of which Odysseus tries to get out of by sowing salt. He is definitely in the war by the time Illiad starts. Illiad really only talks about war and Odyssey only tells the story of his 14 year trip back home. I believe the story about Odysseus sowing salt is more popular folk lore from Greece than anything else.
