I'm a graphic designer and typographer so I can help here. I usually go to a site called www.fontfont.de - they are an excellent German type publisher. They also have a (slightly useless) font finder where you can specify what serifs, bowls, obliqueness etc. you're looking for. Otherwise try Linotype, Monotype, Adobe, Bitstream, ITC etc. For funky and picture fonts try www.t26.com.

Personally I prefer to use printed reference, so i use the Precision Type font reference guide but I have a feeling these are expensive. (I nicked mine from an agency I was working at.) T26 will send you a portfolio of their fonts for about 15 dollars which is very handy too, as will some of the traditional font houses.

Hope that's helpful.

PS Free fonts tend to be extremely poorly drawn and kerned so i would avoid them at all costs.
