I have to disagree with what Gypsy said... that did not work in my case. The military base, or those in charge of BAH and military allotments, pay, etc. required (or at least they did) papers stating that he was ordered to pay child support. No base is just going to take your word for it, even if you have divorce papers. You'll need papers from the court that state he's supposed to pay child support, and for how much before they'll even look at you. As for the "ad" its called a Notice of Publication, and yes, it can be done if you are not sure where the spouse is. Contact your courthouse, they'll tell you which papers they'll allow you to place notice in. The notice has to run for 30 days, you will then get proof of this from the paper, and return it to the courthouse with the divorce papers. This will be considered "serving him". If he does not respond the divorce will most likely be granted by default. If you don't know where he is, you will have trouble getting child support from him. I would maybe go to JAG on base and ask about it. They're not usually quick to help us civie's but you are still technically married to him so JAG has to help you being a military wife.

Yes, it does vary from state to state. You should ask a lawyer or go look up the Indiana Statutes on-line about the specifics of "Service by Publication." I found this website for you:\

it varies by state but usually anywhere from 30 days to four weeks. if you are doing the divorce yourself, the library has forms and books to help you and they do tell you how long you have to run the ad in the newspaper.

In most cases you don't need to find the spouse and still get the divorce. Contact a lawyer to be sure.
