I had a bumpy lawn and I tried and tried to level it ! I put top soil wherever needed every week for 3 months but didn't get the result I wanted. I also tried to use a lawn roller but it just made it worse. It was still bumpy in many places. Finally I gave up and took off the entire grass. Got 2 truck loads of soil & leveled the ground and re planted my lawn. It took me less effort and time to do that and I have a wonderful leveled lawn now. I suggest instead of wasting time & energy just re-lay your lawn again after levelling the ground.

1. You can fill in low spots with a one quarter inch layer of topsoil or sand. You may have to gradually fill in a low spot to avoid smothering the grass. Another alternative is to lift the sod with a shovel, fill with sand or topsoil, and replace the sod.

How to Level a Bumpy Lawn

Is your lawn bumpy? It doesn't have to be a permanent problem.
Steps

1. Wait a day or two after it rains, when the ground is damp (but not completely wet and squicky.)
2. Overseed your lawn with new grass seed.
3. Rent a lawn roller at your local tool rental location. Big stores like "Home Depot" will have these.
4. Take the lawn roller home in the back of a truck or trailer.
5. Fill the lawn roller with water. This adds weight, which will help flatten your lawn.
6. Using your lawn tractor or large, muscular body, pull the roller around your yard, being certain to roll over every bumpy spot.
7. Return the roller before your time is up, so as not to incur additional charges.

Tips

* Doing this when the ground is too wet might result in ruts.

Warnings

* Rest often if you decide to pull around a large heavy roller with your muscular (or less-than muscular) body.

Things You'll Need

fill the holes or depression little by little with new soil and carefully shave of the tops of the bumps until your lawn is flat. Or dig out the whole lawn, level it and buy ready made turf or seeds.

get some soil and top dress it, making sure that you pack the holes with lots of soil, rake it even and "Bob's your Uncle"

just watch out for those blisters we tend to get from a rake.
