Yes you can take a gap year - when I worked at a university the students were given not necessarily a certificate it was more like a confirmation letter stating that they completed that year and could proceed onto the next year and it also had their grade on it.
You will need to check with your university as our students had to complete the whole course within X amount of years and that included any years they had to resit if they didn't get the grades to proceed to the following year

You can only take a time out between courses but in some courses, like a language degree, you can take a year placement overseas. It's best to check with your university advisor. For teacher training, you'd only get the certificate to say you are qualified at the end of the course.

Maybe you should think about whether you really want to go to university. Of course, if there is a specific reason for taking time out, that'd different (I don't mean travelling), but if you go with the intention of taking such a substantial time out, you might not be best suited to university.

You can take a break, if that's what you would like to do. You may want to talk to an advisor at your school to see what you would need to do for that.

I don't recommend taking a gap year during your degree, unless it is necessary. i.e. health problems, grievances etc.

It can disrupt the flow of your learning, and you can forget things.
