The air-con is disabled when outside temp is below 4 C to prevent system icing up. If it is above 4 the system should work, and you will hear/feel the engine pick up the load of the compressor when you switch it on. Only with engine idling!. You should also notice an immediate change in the air temperature from the vents provided the system is set to max cool.

Get a big heater and blow hot air through your front grille, switch on fan and let hot air into car for 5 minutes then turn on a/c and see if it cools down air in the car.

Where did you bring it from? Oh, you mean bought. Set the air conditioning to a lower temp than outside and use a thermometer.

you should hear the aircon pump click in when switching on also you will hear the electric cooling fan cut in this is to keep the gases cool

if its 5c or lower it should not come on, there is a safety device to stop it freezing up.
