My husband and I have been talking about having a baby the past month or so. I explained that I have been having a strong maternal instinct lately that tells me we should have a baby, but we both agreed to wait about another year for financial reasons...

Thursday he took a flight to new york for business. I found out 30 minutes later that I AM pregnant NOW---due in October. This will be pleasant news, but definately a surprise. Today he flies home and I need to announce the news.

#1) I tried to get him to go out tonight and he said he'd be too tired. So I have to tell him at home.

#2) I don't want to drag this out-- I want to tell others, and to tell them, I first have to tell the hubby--- so he needs to know today. I can't wait until he "finds" something or "figures it out".

What are your BEST suggestions?

I think it's good you're not going out. I travel at times and I love to be home just with family. Get him out of his work suit and fed. If he drinks, let him relax for a bit with his beer of whatever, but not more than 1 or 2. Let him chill for a while. Traveling is so stressful these days. After no less than an hour, tell him you need to talk with him, something important came up when he was away. Now he's focused and afraid it's bad news. Then said--"I know we hoped to wait a year, but I found out we are pregnant now." Be quick, be direct, then be silent and let him process and ask the necessary questions.

Congratulations. I'm sure your husband will be thrilled! I think its as simple as gabbing take away, relaxing and telling your husband that you have a "litlle part of him" growing inside you. As for the financial side of things, a baby will cost exactly the same in 12months time, and although it's financially scary to add to your life, it can work in your favour. It did for my husband and I. Our first pregnancy was unplanned and we were quite young, but today we are more financially secure than the majority of our friends. Our daughter helped us built strong foundations. However I'm not saying parenting isn't expensive, as it is, but it also makes you more aware of were you direct your money. Best Wishes, I'm sure all will be fantastic!

Most guys are most receptive to things when they are relaxed, fed, and happy. Try making a very special meal and over dinner at home give him a gift (the preg. test in a box idea suggested here could work), or you can do what I did (i'm very impatient and wanted to just yell it out)-

When he came home, i ran up to him and gave him a huge hug and kiss, all very happy and excited (a nice greeting when they are tired and probably missed you) and he says "this is nice- why are you so happy?" and I looked at him and said "because your going to be the best daddy in the world!!" he got this surprised look and then hugged me even harder and twirled me around and then started kissing my tummy and talking to it... i think it was the best way to tell him- he certainly liked it!!

With our first child I wrapped up the preg test in a box and had him open it. He was surprised. And with our second one I just sat him down and said, "ok what do you hope we have this time". And he automatically knew.

There are lots of cute ways to tell him. Just be creative. Or you can just come out and tell him.

Good luck

Congratulations! It's impossible to plan these things perfectly, and I am sure your husband will be thrilled with the news in the end.

Get a bib, hat or baby onsie that says "I love my daddy," wrap it up for him, and give it to him over dinner. :)

Best wishes!

The way I told my husband was, "Hey--there's TWO lines showing up on this test!" LOL

Ask him about converting a room to a nursery if you haven't done so already, and go from there--and congratulations!

To tell my fiance I was (he ended up being at the doc with me and heard it there) but I was going to go buy a lil pair of newborn shoes and wrap them in a box and have him open it!

You're American? Tell him there will just be the three of you for Thanksgiving this year, and wait for him to work it out.

Congratulations.
