Points are very tricky to set due to wear on the cam and also points being pitted,if you have a new set you don't have to worry about pitting.I recommend using a dwell meter to set the points as its more accurate than a feeler Gage.Find out what the dwell should be pull out the coil wire so it wont start and have someone turn over the engine while you watch the meter and adjust the allen screw until it reads the proper dwell.Personally I would buy a electronic kit that replaces the points. Its well worth it. Good luck.

tap the starter in short bursts until one of the high points on the distributor cam shaft is pushing the rubbing block on the points to the maximum gap possible. Then set the point gap to the spec with a feeler gauge. Replace the condenser too. Don't drop the screws down into the distributor!
You can then use a dwell meter to recheck the specified dwell in degrees. GM distributors have a special adjustment hex wrench opening on the distributor so that you can adjust the point gap while the engine's idling (disconnect and plug the vacuum advance hose).

You need a dwell meter, then you can install a point adjusting driver through the little slide door on the distributor cap, it looks like a screw driver with a small Allen wrench head. Start the engine and set to 30 degrees. If the engine won't start you can still set them by cranking the engine via the ignition key. Be care-full and good luck.

If you don't have a feeler gage, (and most of us don't) do this. There are two screws, one is a pivot loosen it slightly the other loosen, it has a notch you can use the screwdriver to turn. The distributor needs to be turned so that the points will be open. Use a piece of a box as the feeler gage, open the points so that the cardboard slips in, tighten the screws. Your ready to rock.

that truck probably got points that takes a allen wrench.ok if you dont have a diagnoses machine, then start your truck and lift up the little window and take a allen wrench and turn the points.1 way it will slow down the engine and the other way it will loose power.put it about half way.thats the way i use to do it,but if you can ge a feelers gage in to the points, adjust the points with a allen wrench about 0.17 on the gage.

ok first you got 2 type of point you can buy, but you going to need a feeler gages, now one type is call wilp point they use a hex nut, wrench, ,, eather way you still need the gage,, ask the part store what they set on,,,now after knowning this your are to turn the motor to where the piont will open, with the gage, ,you turn it screw till it set onthe point gage ann will let the gage slid out easy,, now on wilp point if the truck will run, after setting it, to the gage, crank the moteor, raise the metal tab, on the cap, as the motor running with the hex werech turn the point slow till the motor run smool
