A pond appears shallow than its actually is because the rays of light coming from the bottom of the pond is refracted by the water and form a virtual image of the pond bed some height above where the pond bed actually is thus misleading the observer

Why? Did you step in one thinking it was shallow? I just kidding. It is a funny picture in my head!

It is like an optical illusion. Light reflecting through the water is distorted unable to go in a straight line, therefore, we view it as a shorter distance then it actually is. Imagine a straight line then a zig-zag line the same distance. Which is shorter? The zig-zag line mimics the light through water in the pond.

Cool easy experiment to play with would be take two glass jars fill one with water and leave one empty. What is the difference of the view through the other side? Actually the empty jar will probably distort view also due to conture of glass (again light will be bent) so a square glass may be a bit better.

Hope this was an easy to understand explanation!!!

It is due to refraction

When you look at an object which is in a medium with n the apparent distance is divided by n

this is because of refraction of light, when light travels from denser medium to rare medium it bends away the normal separating the two surfaces. now when extended back they meet at a point which is above the actual surface and hence cause it to appear coming from there.

it is as simple as that , its due to refraction of light

It is due to TOTAL INTERNAL REFLECTION takes place. It seems APPARENT DEPTH than it actually is.
