Given this is in the careers and employment section, you look before you leap. Life is way too short, and professional networks way too pervasive - to risk a bad career move.

Pull out the stops researching companies before you go there - in particular seeking out people through personal networks that can give you more unbiased readouts - and thoroughly evaluate options where you're at before leaving.

sadly I sometimes leap before I look. "Out of the frying pan into the fire" is my motivation for doing this, I guess, the key words being "out of the frying pan," but sometimes it turns out for the best. However, more often than not it's "into the fire."
