Much of that country is limestone just like the Yucatan in Mexico - and like our state of Florida has many sinkholes - and many more developing every day.

Nothing unsual about this at all.

Sinkholes are formed by corroded rocks, which shifts in formation underneathe to create this massive hole. Such holes are usually filled up with water creating lakes or becomes part of an ocean, where it becomes a habitat for sea species and such. The Guatemalan sink hole is most likely filled with a combination of water, mud, and whatever it took down with it. It looks like an endless hole that leads to hell, but there is an end to that hole and falling into it would be disastrous.

it would not caused by sewer services for the army to be there
