I agree with gearbox1. If it is the 4.0L SOHC V6 engine, you'll need to remove the four 7mm screws that secure the top cover to access. Once removed, you'll see the IAC valve sitting on the top of the upper intake, secured by two 10mm bolts and an electrical connector. Hope this helps.

Sounds like the idle speed motor is stuck.. depending upon the motor in your explorer, usually it's within about 1 inch or two of the throttle cables (the explorer 4.0sohc is weird in that it's actually in the middle of the intake under a cover) but has a round cylinder that is colored silver and a cast piece hooked to it... It has two bolts though the cast piece and has an electrical connector... They are known for clogging up and getting stuck and needs replacement...

change it and clean the throttle body like someone suggested (as the actual plate also helps govern idle but a clogged throttle body won't keep one from starting.. it will just make it idle like crap)

The sensor is called an idle speed motor. It is located on the throttle body, usually under the plastic cover. They are not cheap so be sure it's the problem. I would be sure you don't have a vacuum leak, this will cause the same symptoms. Good thing to remember, test twice, replace once. Good luck.

while you are asking for the throttle position sensor[located on throttle body housing. opposite of throttle cable] what you may very well need is a throttle body cleaning [remove air boot ] use carb-clean spray and a soft brass [toothbrush] to clean with .[plastic brushes are melted by carb-cleaner] this fixes 95% of these complaints on all brands of cars and trucks. also the idle control motor on these can sometimes be effectively cleaned but they may give more trouble later if the throttle body cleaning doesn't cure you, replace the idle motor they are fairly cheap usually less than 60 dollars

It's computer controlled. In most cases when it won't idle as it should, it's the mass air flow sensor or perhaps a vacuum leak.

Fuel problems most likely...but a driving problem may be a DPFE sensor. They go bad on Ford ALL the time! They are not too costly and you can replace it yourself.

it should right by the throttle body, but are you sure thats your problem?if its bad then it should show up on the dash.also it could be the throttle position sensor.also it could be the gas filter dirty.also clean out the throttle body.take some throttle body cleaner and clean it.if it cant breathe, then it will shut down.also check the air filter.
