It is close between the Tigers and Twins. The Tigers had the best starting 5 last year and with an additional year and the success of last year they could be even better this year. The bullpen is very deep, either Zumaya or Rodney could close if Jones falters. Bonderman may take the next step this year and get consideration for the A.L. Cy Young award. They have a question mark at lefthaqnded specialist now that Walker is gone but have a couple of candidates to fill that spot.
The Twins have Santana...the best pitcher in baseball hands down. The rest of the starting five all come with questionmarks although the potential is there from 2 through 5. Silva should bounce back 9the WBC series hurt his production last year) and Garza could very well be this years Liriano and Bonser looks pretty good too. The bullpen from top to bottom might be the best in baseball, Nathan is an elite closer. They have great balance and a lot of depth. If Liriano were healthy I would maybe give them the edge but the Tiger starters are clearly better at the moment and the bullpen is not at the level of the twins but pretty dominant in their own right so right now i would have to give a slight nod to the Tigers (and their system is loaded even after dealing Humberto Sanchez).

The Giants. Tim Lincecum 10-3, 2.40 5 era, a million.07 WHIP, 168 Ks Matt Cain eleven-2, 2.32 era, a million.23 WHIP, 103 Ks Randy Johnson 8-6, 4.80 one era, a million.32 WHIP, 80 Ks Barry Zito 6-10, 4.sixty 8 era, a million.37 WHIP, ninety Ks Jonathan Sanchez/Ryan Sadowski 5-10, ninety 9 Ks (blended) a number of those numbers do not look that large after Timmy and Matt, yet Zito had a very good day trip immediately which he has had the different day trip or so. RJ have been given to 3 hundred wins this twelve months, and Sanchez threw a no-no. A pitching team incorporates the bullpen, and the Giants has been the perfect in the bigs this twelve months. Jeremy Affeldt has 20 holds, it quite is sturdy for 2d in the Majors, Sergio Romo has eleven.2 Ks according to 9 innings, it quite is an fairly sturdy cost. Brian Wilson has been rock sturdy of previous due, and has 21/25 saves on the twelve months. while the Giants starters can get by using 6 innings, we've Romo for the seventh, Affeldt for the 8th, and Wilson for the 9th, to not point out Brandon Medders and Justin Miller, each and every of whom have ERAs under 3.00.

Minnesota Twins...

I know, I know...they lost Liriano and they lost Radke, but if you look at the rotation possibilities they are still rock solid.

You have Santana who is easily the best pitcher in all of baseball.

Then you have Boof Bonser who showed down the stretch and into the playoffs last season that he is the real deal.

Then there is Matt Garza and Glenn Perkins, two phenoms who have accelerated through the minors and are both major league ready. Both had the same struggles that Liriano had during his late-season stint in 2005 and we all saw how he rebounded last season...expect the same.

Carlos Silva, Sidney Ponson and Ramon Ortiz are all essentially place-holders for the time being and will make good inning-eaters who will have a solid start or two once out of every five times out of the gate.

Luckily the bullpen is solid enough to back them up. Guys like Reyes, Crain, Neshek, Rincon and Guerrier can hold down a game any day of the week when called upon.

Joe Nathan is clearly one of the top three most dominant closers in the game and is only getting better.

Think further ahead and realize that Liriano will be part of this rotation again next year and Scott Baker may finally get it together and live up to his potential and JD Durbin is in now or never mode and may finally live up to his hype from three years ago. This is a deep rotation with lots of options and a killer bullpen.

Honorable Mention: San Diego and Boston

The Detroit Tigers. Wicked starters with fireballers and even if Jones went down then in comes fireballer Zumaya.
Also Boston is good, Philly is good and deep. Milwaukee is good.Minnesota is OK and Toronto is also good.
How anyone can even mention Carlos Silva (he of the most HR given up last year) Ponson, AKA Mister Krispy Kreme and Ramon Ortiz who sucks is crazy. Yes, Santana is the man and they have a couple of good young pitchers but depth is important. Santana can only go every 5th day and what if he got injured?? Put it this way, Silva, Ponson and Ortiz could not make it as Boston, Detroit or Philly's 6th starter. PPPPLLLEEEAASSEeee.
