I always thought it was the Sultan of Brunai, but accourding to Forbes magazine the ten richest billionaires in the world ranked by wealth for 2006 are

1 William Gates
2 Warren Buffett
3 Carlos Slim Helú
4 Ingvar Kamprad
5 Lakshmi Mittal
6 Paul Allen
7 Bernard Arnault
8 Prince Alwaleed
9 Kenneth Thomson
10 Li Ka-shing

The men are ranked according to what they are worth in U.S. dollars, no matter what currency they use. The new list will be out on March 8th. But Bill Gates has held the #1 spot for quite a while, expect him to stay there this year.

William Henry Gates III (aka Bill Gates) the co-founder of Microsoft is the richest man in the world. Forbe's Magazine's list of The World's Billionaires has ranked him as the richest person in the world for the last 13 years. Recent estimates put his net worth near $82 billion. When family wealth is considered, his family ranks second behind the Walton family -- the founders of Wal-mart.

Forbes Magazine says the world's richest man is Microsoft's Bill Gates:

"Bill Gates retains his title as the world’s richest person for the twelfth straight year, proving that while it’s getting easier to make a billion, the same can’t be said for making $50 billion. "

Depends on how you define richest. Typically, people use KNOWN assets and income. However, there are plenty of people whose assets and income are a total mystery. For instance, how much money did the top management of Enron REALLY steal from Enron and from other companies? Therefore, the REAL richest person is never famous. Of those whose assets and income are known, too, the value of the assets and income varies, from day to day. For example, Gates may have $40 billion in assets and Mittal may have 38 billion Euros. Depending on the exchange rate between Euros and US dollars, one day it may be one person and another day (or the next ho ur) it may be someone else. What is really important is not how much money someone has but how much influence they wield.

Nobody can touch the hidden riches in the Vatican.

My vote is for the Pope.

Too bad he can't spend some of it on the ills of the world. I wish the catholic church would sell off some of its assets and put it $$$ where its mouth is.
