No heat rocks or wrapping towels around heat rocks, what are these people thinking? Leopard Geckos are nocturnal so its not natural for them to bask in sunlight like a bearded dragon would. For our leopard geckos we simply use an under the tank heater which is like 10 bucks at http://lllreptile.com/ and can also be found at any pet store. I then put outdoor carpet down and cover that with a layer of calci sand. I use the carpet just to keep the gecko from digging through sand and touching the hot bottom of the aquarium. I dont have any additional light source for the gecko because they are hiding all day long coming out at nite to feed.

As said earlier, dont use a heat rock, thermal burns are bad news.
I dont really think you need a light for leo's unless you want to illuminate the tank during the day. Leopard geck's are nocturnal, so they dont require UVB like a lot of herp's do. Get an under tank heater and use that instead. Some nocturnal animals are very light sensitive.

DO NOT USE HEAT ROCKS. they can cause burns and supply inadequate heat. id actually use a triple fixture bulb holder- i use the kind from flukers. in the center 18" id put a uvb/uva emitter, keep this on only during the day. on the right side i'd put a 100-150watt heating bulb ( not a household bulb, they are NOT a good heat emitter), and keep this on during the day. on the other side i use a infarred heating bulb thats no more than 100 watts, use this during the day, and have this be the only one at night. this way there is enough heat, day and night. l.g.'s are used to temp drops at night so its okay for it to drop about 10 degrees.

i don't use lights for my leopard gecko. Just an undertank heater. Never use heat rocks. They burn your herps belly. Leopard geckos are nocturnal and do not require basking lights. Mine doesn't even like heat lights. And UV is not poisonous. It is necessary to ensure your pets health. Uv is dangerous to people because we do not know when to get out of the sun, and reptiles do. Artificial UVB is virtually harmless to reptiles. Do not take advice from someone who cannot even spell poisonous or experienced and claims to know it all.

the final concern to do is to get an under tank warmth pad. Being floor dwellers, abdomen warmth is quite considerable for them, incredibly for his or her digestion. For my leopard gecko I incredibly have a warmth pad that keeps to be on each and all of the time, and then a low wattage (40 watt) bulb for in the time of the day. they might tolerate some temperature drop in one day, yet whilst it drops under 70 then i might shop a warmth mild on for them till you do get a warmth pad. attempt to get a purple or blue bulb for in the time of the evening as they do desire separate day and evening photoperiods.

Above is a link to a care sheet. I don't think fluorescent will give off enough heat. You can use a regular household bulb for heat.
