Okay, now that's funny, I too have a friend that has asked questions like this to me. Oh, the stories I could tell you.

Cost.
Just today we had a curtain fitter come to measure my bay window. The curtains will cost a whopping £450 with a blackout lining. If I had to put an extra layer to show off on the outside, it would be another £300 or so.
Curtains are expensive - and I do wonder why, since it's not that difficult (or shouldn't be).

What do you mean your "ginger" friend? If there were patterns on both sides, you would drive down a street and it would look like a bunch of dishrags- there would be no uniformity in the community.

Because the pattern on the outside would fade due to the exposure to the natural light - not to mention is would look dumb from the outside.

My house does look boring from the outside.
My curtains are blue, but the back of them is white.

Aesthetically pleasing to the occupants only. They're not the public's business.
