5^8 to evaluate without a computer

5^8 = (5^2)^4 = 25^4 = (625)^2 = 390625

Yes the question has sense. It doesn't aim to make u solve the question , but it is testing ur calculation speed. By applying certain tricks which when employed it can be done in seconds otherwise would take 2 much time.
5^8 = 5^4*5^4 = 625*625

Now for finding square of a number with 5 as a unit digit has a peculiar property.
The last two digits of the product are 25
For other digits take the first two digits ( ie 62 leaving 5) and multiply it by next number ie, 63.
Hence the remaining digits of the product will be 62*63=3906.
Hence the final answer will be = 390625.
I hope this method would clear ur doubt more accurately.

Sure it makes sense! But, it is not a SUM! You are looking for the PRODUCT.

"Sum" means the answer to an addition problem; "product" means the answer to a multiplication problem. A "power" is a number that implies repeated multiplication, so you are looking for the product.

5^8 = 5*5*5*5*5*5*5*5 (5 is the number being multiplied 8 times.)

5^8 is the power form
5*5*5*5*5*5*5*5 is the expanded form
390625 is the answer you get when you actually do the multiplication, so that is the standard form

The person above who said to write it as "a x 10^b" is putting it in scientific notation (3.90625 x 10^5)

Hope that helps!

It is the same as writing

5 x 5 x 5 x 5 x 5 x5 x 5 x 5 = 390625

5^0=1
5^1= 5
5^2=25
5^3=125
5^4=625
5^5=3125
6^6=15625
5^7=78125
5^8=390625

3.90625 x 10^5 = 390625

Evaluate means, "work out".
5^(8) = (5 x 5) x (5 x 5) x (5 x 5) = 25 x 25 x 25
5^(8) = 390625 = 3.90625 x 10^(5)

This means:

5.5.5.5.5.5.5.5 (5 multiplied by itself 8 times}.

This is easy, but a bit long to work out yourself. The calculator gives it as 390,625.

In standard form (a one-digit integer and decimal fraction, multiplied by a power of ten) it comes out as:

3.90625 x 10^5 (10^5 is 10.10.10.10.10 or 100,000).

To reduce 390,625 to 3.90625 we have divided by 100.000 so need the multiplier to keep the answer the right size. I hope this clears it up.

5 to the power of 8 means
5*5*5*5*5*5*5*5
= 390625
which is 5 multiply by itself 8 times.

Standard notation means to leave it in
a * 10^b

Figure out the a and b by yourself!

y=5^8
take natural logs of each side
lny= 8*ln5
raise e to the power
of each side;
e^(lny)=e^( 8*ln5)
y=e^( 8*ln5)
=390,625
=5*5*5*5*5*5*5*5
{calculation by TI-80 calculator}

i hope that this helps
