Tax cut premium offers every thing (state+efiling+audit defence) for about $40, but for the same features Turbo tax charges $140.
Why the big difference? any ideas?

Thanks 'bostonian'. I have also used TaxCut for several years because it is priced better than TurboTax. There was one instance when I used TurboTax - for a change - and actually found the experience less intuitive. I came back to TaxCut from the next year. To my pleasant surprise I found that I could import prev year TurboTax stuff back to TaxCut. Also, I could not password protect TurboTax file! These are experiences from 5 years ago. I am sure much has changed since then.

None that I know of. I've used Tax Cut for many years and have been very happy with it; its lower price is one of the reasons that I use it. IMHO, there's no good reason for the price difference.

You may want to check your state's tax website. Many states have on-line efiling for fairly simple returns that is free.
