It won't go beyond the prompt screen which asks you if you want to go to safe mode or start normally, so i choose start normally and it restarts itself and asks me again if i want safe mode or not; cue going round in circles and me wanting to kick the computer!

Any ideas anyone? My antivirus is always up to date too.

Seems to be working now for some reason.
And for those numpties who thought they were smart by pointing out my 'grammatical error', meed to learn to chill out. I put 'broked' deliberatelyfor a laugh.

Could be a problem with windows or a problem with your hard drive.

You could start in Safe mode, and try to restore to a previous save point.

If still no joy, and you have got your recovery disk, run recovery and see if it finds any errors.

Failing that - you may have to re-install windows.

If still nothing - then maybe it's a hard drive problem

it sounds like your boot ini is corrupt, the boot ini is a list of commands which windows goes through when you first start up windows
there is a way to fix this problem using the recovery console but unless you are a advanced user its quite hard to perform, but take a look at this ...http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654
you would be bst doing a fesh install of windows xp in my opinion, you can either do this with a normal xp disk or use your recovery disk that came with your p.c if you still have it
with both methods you will need to set your p.c to boot from cd(go into set up(bios) at start by pressing delete)and then into advanced bios settings and change the boot order to 1..cd rom 2.ide 1 3 floppy disc, then save and exit set up
the cd will then ask you to "press any key to boot from cd"do this then follow the on screen prompts
or this could be a ideal time to upgrafe to vista, use premium or above as vista basic is not much kop,and dosent have any of the aero 3d apps
finally check with your p.c,s manual or website if your p.c has a recovery feature built in to the hard drive, some p.c,s all you need to do is press f8(or something) on boot up and a recovery screen will appear and you have a option to recover your p.c
the files and windows are on a small partition built into the hard rive, but i am sceptical about this method as what happens if you hard drive mechanism fails?
i hope this has helped
good luck my friend

did you go int your c drive through my computer and change anything? That might have caused it. You can put your system restore disk that same with your computer when you bought it and it should reinstall windows. But the bad thing is is that you will loose all of your files. There might be another way to get past it. But I know that that should work. Also It sounds like some of your files are corrupted. Hope it works for you.

have you added any new hardware lately or installed any new software. choose to start in safe mode and then do a restore to yesterday or last week and see if that solves it.

Your computer is "Broken", not "broked". And no, don't kick it that won't help.

Have you tried going into safe mode?
