Since being desexed nearly 12 months ago, my foxie has ballooned in size. She huffs and puffs a lot and has trouble getting up to her favourite chair. Do you have a recipe that can actually help her loose weight? She is only 7 years old.

Just so you know, what she gets fed is not that much. 180g can food with vegies in it or same weight in dry food. She gets fed once a day in the evening, so maybe if I feed her twice a day with half the portion size, that might make the difference? I have consulted my vet that I have been with for 24 years, she is not concerned that it is medical and I trust her judgment.

Buy weight control formula food and biscuits. Do no give her any people food and make sure she gets lots of walks for exercise.

Correct portion size is going to depend on your dog's size. My dog was a medium sized dog and his normal weight was 50 pounds. If he ballooned up to 65 lbs, than I would reduce his portion size from 1 cup a day (2 half cups) to maybe a 1/4 cup twice a day. Most dogs I know seem to like being fed twice a day.

If your dog still seems hungry, you may also want to try adding peas to your dog's food. For instance, add 1/4 cup of peas to the dog's 1/4 cup of food. This works best with wet food.

Good luck!

You don't need to buy a different food for your dog to loose weight and to get into better shape. Cut the dogs food down and take the dog for a walk every day. Start with a short walk and add distance every week. Your dog will lose weight and get into better shape and it will also be good for you. If you give your dog treats during the day remember to subtract that amount from there food.

It is not normal to sudden "balloon" and to huff and puff when she didn't before. It is a myth that Spaying causes weight gain, excess calories cause weight gain. I would switch her over to a senior diet (yes 7 is senior in dogs) gradually over 5-7 days. Senior diets are lower in calories to accomodate the changes in the body for older dogs. But first you must call your vet to explain her problem. I suspect a medical cause for her sudden change.

Talk to your vet about a weight loss food. Get her on a good feeding and exercise program.
