I don't think you're going to find a hotel for that cheap. If you do, I'd be shocked - and a little scared.

If your limit is $40/night, I'd suggest looking into hostels. Unlike the stereotypical "youth hostels" for college-age backpackers, many hostels don't have age restrictions or membership requirements. Some even have semi-private rooms (shared bathroom between them) for couples.

Here's a link to the hostels in Belgium. http://www.hostelbelgium.com

Good luck!

There's a useful tool that you can use on this directory of accomodation in Belgium and Brussels etc. You can sort using a filter, the prices, star ratings and facilities to work out the best value. I noticed that there were a lot under $40 in hotels, rather than hostels.

One tip, check out the last minute prices, since they can be lower than displayed on the front pages. Dig deep into the offers and you will likely find free extras like breakfasts, amenities etc. - all of which coupled with your location ( to save on transport costs and time ) are worth taking into consideration to obtain the best value.

Here are some links to the main centres. Good luck with your plans:

Tricky to answer not knowing the city you are visiting. Try this site http://www.unusedrooms.com/specials/country/Belgium.html
where you can make your reservation up to a year in advance. If you are travelling soon try the link to the last minute sites. The hotel managers reduce their prices the longer it remains unsold. Huge bargains to be picked up but you stand the risk of not getting a room. Another approach is to search for standby hotel Belgium and see what you can get.

Hello, from personal experience the booking.com works great for me.
You can find good offers, reviews and ratings from guests (a great tool to decide based on other people bad or good experience).
I'm using it the last three years and I didn't have any problems. The hotels and the rooms were exactly as I red on site.
The maps also gives you an idea where the hotels reside.
The reservation process is easy and you don't need to pay with credit card. Enjoy your travel.
