How to bulid encough critical mass for my internet startup?

I am in the middle of building a website which is kind of like craigslist but are more for people who're willing to pay money for serious answers. Let's put aside questions of whether this idea will work or not aside for now.

My question is how could I gather enough traffic, or people using it? A website likes this always faces how to build critical mass. Anyone who has a war story to share, or experiences on how works and what not?

One thing I should mention is that we do have some seed funding, about $80,000 at this moment, we could spend for marketing. I'll definitely try to ping bloggers, get google ads, some PR if possible, but what else shall I try?

Getting traffic is a combination of a lot of things. The key to success is to create great content that visitors want to use, search engines will love and other websites will naturally link to. Of course, it's easier said than done.

1. Create the best content you can with the best products you can possibly offer. Your content is your best advertisement - if visitors love your content, then they will go back and spread the word to others.

2. Make it easy for users to recommend your site. Viral marketing is very important -- and easy to tap on the Web. But give your users the tools. You have to to get visitors to your site. One of the easiest ways to do this is to buy into a "pay per click" engine such as Google Ad Sense. Traffic is the key.

I have also seen people do it with gimmicks. The more $$ you have to the initial investment, the more gimmicks you can try. For example, GoldenPalaceCasino (GPC) used to purchase weird items on eBay for ridiculously high prices. These sales would make it to various news outlets. The general public would ask..."Who in their right mind would buy a grilled cheese sandwich with the image of the Virgin Mary on it for $10,000?" When people would find out it was GPC, many of them would check out their website. I don't know if you have an extra $10,000 laying around for such a gimmick, but it is just an example of something that has been done in the past.
