I was told that if you are on SSI you don't have to file unless you have tax deductions. Like charity donation. Is this True or false?

Deductions reduce taxable income. If your only income is SSI, then you have no taxable income, and therefore no deductions. You are not required to file a tax return and if you did file, you would not receive any refund.

SSI is not taxable income so there's no taxes to credit your donations against. If you're on SSDI (some people confuse SSI with SSDI) you should file your taxes.

It's probably a good idea to file anyway this year, like the Bostonian said, because of the national telephone tax rebate. Also, in some states on state income taxes low-income people are eligible for renter's assistance and home owner's assistance. These are annual rebates. California has such a program.

False. SSI isn't taxable so there's no reason to file at all. Any deductions would be useless since your taxable income is already zero.

SSI isn't earned income so you can't claim the EITC based on it.

You could file this year and claim the phone tax rebate. That's $30.00 for you if you're a single filer.

Partially true. If your only income is SSI, you don't have to file - it's not taxable or even reportable. But deductions wouldn't be of any use to you if you don't have any taxable income, so even if you have deductions, there is nothing to file on.

False, you don't have to file unless you received a form from the government. SSI recipients do not need to file, even if you have tax deductions, unless you choose to.
