Samuel the Prophet was told by God that David was a man after his own heart.

In short David was very physically courageous. A real Mans Man so to speak. He went to fight Goliath and he and his men it would seem never backed down to anyone. I believe historically there is proof of king David the warrior king.

But according to the Bible he was also a great musician and many of the psalms are attributed to David. Hence the man was both a great poet and musician.

But David was very much a human being and I think that is also another reason he is so loved. He reminds us so much of our own faults. I mean David makes sure one of his soldiers in the army gets killed so that this soldier does not find out his wife Bathsheba is pregnant by David. David then tops it off by then taking Bathsheba as his own wife. It does not stop there... Were lead to the impression in the Bible that David does not seem to care at all about this and if anything has forgotten his sins.

However, the Prophet Nathan with a parable so to speak reminds David what he has done! David, shows great repentenace and accepts all the punishment God will inflict upon him. When David like us understands how our sins are so hurtful to Gods heart David repents.

Despite at times having great faults - one of the great qualities of David often over looked by people is his humility unlike most of the other kings of Israel. When David realises he really upset God and his fellow man he accepts it like a man so to speak. David does not continue to sin in such a way but genuinally tries to change his way. David realises who he is before God dust and ashes.

Other aspects of his character as mentioned is his physical bravery moved by the Holy Spirit! As a boy he has killed lions protecting the sheep (he is a shepherd interestingly enough). As a teenager he fights the great warrior Goliath moved by the Holy Spirit. David seems genuinally shocked that the people of Israel, Gods very own people are so frightened before this man Goliath. David realises that before God even in his teenage youth that all men are dust and ahes so why be afraid! Moved by his great faith in God he defeats Goliath.

Another thing about David is his genuine Love and fear of God. This King gets rid of all the known idols out of Israel and tries to return Israel completely to God. As a militariily leader he protects Isreal from all its enemies at that time period. David also it would seem has no fear in publically praising God. It is said his praise, worship and dance of God while naked was so great that his wife scolded David. But David praising God rebuked her.

David was also prophetic - if you read the psalms many were prophesing Jesus and even the christian people of today (people of many nations praising the true God). Moreover God promised from his seed would be the Messiah (David may not have understood this at the time).

But then again don't get me wrong David could be violent, sly, lustful, proud etc. (like most of us). But he always turned back to God when he was rebuked by priests and prophets of the Lord.

I believe humility was Davids greatest quality. He was also very responsive to the promptings of the Holy Spirit (for the most part). The young shepherd boy child who became King of Israel.

David loved and honoured God. He never let any sin he committed come between him and God. He was quick to acknowledge his sins no matter how great and ask for forgiveness. He wrote the Psalms and God loves to be praised.
