On the one hand, John was one of Jesus three closest friends and was with him from the beginning of his ministry (excluding the baptism and the fasting in the desert).

Yet on the other hand, Paul was very well educated, he firmly knew the Jewish law, he knew the predictions the Messiah must fulfill.. in other words Paul knew theology very well. He knew everything from Roman sports to Greek puns, and his writing is like PhD level Greek while the fisherman John is like elementary school Greek.

So basically it is between a close friend or a PhD. Who is more reliable? Is the same thing true in history? Is a scholar more credible than a friend?

Paul and John and all the apostles were reliable! They both had different assignments to accomplish, Paul was sent to preach to the Gentiles (The other flock of Yeshua ( Jesus) While John preached mainly to The Jew. They were both friends of Yeshua Ha Messiach! Jesus, The Messiah, appeared to Paul several times in visions, and I believe its clearly, face to face. It wasn't Paul's PhD in Judaism, that qualified him as reliable or not! Nor did the close bonding friendship of John qualify him as more Icredible! It was Father God Himself , in Yeshua that sees into the hearts of mankind and knew them before they were in their mothers womb! The Holy Spirit empowers all who trust in, adhere to, and rely on, God in all the issues of life! The Lord selected John as a fisherman, and Saul as a persecutor of The Way, how did he know if they were at all to be trusted? He is God! All knowing, all seeing, and predestined them to be conformed into the image of Christ Jesus before the foundation of the world, the Word is plain on this fact! When Yeshua prayed in the garden He stated, I have revealed you TO THOSE YOU GAVE ME out of the world.they were (past tense) yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. Now I know that everything you have given me comes from you. For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They KNEW for certainty that I came from you,and they believe that you sent me. I PRAY FOR THEM. I AM NOT PRAYING FOR THE WORLD, BUT FOR THOSE YOU HAVE GIVEN ME, FOR THEY ARE YOURS., all I have is yours and all you have is mine, and glory has come to me through them. (John 17:6-12)......So my point is, credibility and reliability are based on listening to the voice of The Holy Spirit as you read and meditate in His written Word, the two voices shall line up, in unity, becomes one voice, the 3 in one, and this my friend is reliable and credible and can be proved by use, continually.Exodus 33:11 The Lord would speak to Moses face to face,as a man speaks with a friend.Read Ex.33:7-11) it explains the way Moses approached God, and Joshua as a type of The Holy Spirit. Read -John 15:9-17) v.14 says..you are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because does not know his masters business.Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I have learned from The Father I have made known to you. You have not chose me, but I have chose you, to go and bear fruit, fruit that remains.

Because the earliest actual texts found of either writing do not date to within 100 years of their actual lives...

neither is "more" reliable. Stories written after the fact by people who could not have possibly lived and walked with the man named Jesus.

You're comparing apples and oranges. The writings of both are considered Canonical (inspired by the Holy Spirit) and therefore equally reliable.

Must be John because I don't see a book of Paul.

Why must we choose between the 2? They both say the same things. They both followed Christ.

If by reliability, you mean in terms of what they both wrote - both their writings are as reliable as if the Lord himself was speaking.
