Microwaving for just a minute will soften hard brown sugar. It's worth a try.

I put a piece of bread in the bag 24 hours before use. I am a big fan of vacuum sealing machines, such as the Foodsaver. When I vacuum, it seals the item, like brown sugar and it stays as fresh as the day you bought it.

Cut an apple and place half in a bay with brown sugar overnight.
The brown sugar absorbs the juice from the apple and moistens itself

If you put a slice of bread in the container and change it routinely, the brown sugar will always stay soft for you!
