Microwaving for just a minute will soften hard brown sugar. It's worth a try.

I put a piece of bread in the bag 24 hours before use. I am a big fan of vacuum sealing machines, such as the Foodsaver. When I vacuum, it seals the item, like brown sugar and it stays as fresh as the day you bought it.

Put it on a cookie sheet, and do a SLOW bake. when it's dried out, hit it with a mallet or the like. when it's all pulverized, put it back where it belongs.
