The police department will not release the information to you. Go to the department of motor vehicles and see. If a felony occurred to the vehicle that the license plate was attached to, then you can file a report and the PD will find out and arrest the person. Depending on your circumstances in what you want to do with the information if and when you get it.

You don't unless you fit into one of the following categories.

1. You own the vehicle.
2. You are law enforcement
3. You are a tow company with actual physical possession of the vehicle and a need to notify the owner you have it
4. You are an insurance company with a claim against the vehicle.

If you are not in any of those categories, you will not be allowed to get that information.

See consumer privacy act.

"In August of 2001, The National Consumer Privacy Act was introduced to amend the previous privacy act of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act. As Acts are implemented to try to catch up with the ever growing technological milestones, new ways of stealing identities and using others information are always coming about. As new Acts are passed, still others are being written to correct them."

You can't. But you can turn the plate in to the police department or the insurance company, and THEY can look it up.

Or if you have a buddy on the police department, he can look it up and illegally pass the information to you.

That information is covered under the privacy laws - thank goodness - as it keeps all the weird stalkers from tracking down their victims easily.

You cannot legally have that info, it could be a dangerous situation for the person you are seeking info on. Can you imagine how pissed off you would be if the DMV or some other state agency gave your info to someone that had a grudge against you, and used that info to hurt/harm you? It's not legal, period.
